RAPE STILL HAPPENS HERE
“She couldn’t get any farther away inside from her skin. She couldn’t get away.” -Cynthia Voight, When She Hollers
I’m afraid to go to the grocery store alone after 3pm. I dread walking by a group of men, whether I know them or not. And I don’t find it chivalrous when a male driver motions for me to walk across the street, knowing he is watching my every bounce. Every repair man or pest exterminator is a potential attacker. My heart beats like the tell-tale heart when a man rings my doorbell. I practice scenarios of telling my 4-year old son to run for help and how I would try to fight. And this is not only my paranoia but from too many uncomfortable eye-contacts and close calls. At 40 years old, I have never been raped, thank Goddess- but many (most?) of my friends have. Most of us (statistically 1 out of 3) were also molested.
According to http://www.dallasrapecrisis.org “Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.” Only 16% of rapes are reported. 6% of all college woman have REPORTED being raped.
So, why does this happen? Why is this still happening? Here AND in 3rd world countries, rape and disrespect of women does not discriminate.
“Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is TEACHING MEN NOT TO RAPE. Go to the source and start there.” -Kurt Cobain
People look at me like I’m an OBNOXIOUS FREEEEEEEEAK because I’m such a Goddess cheerleader, but this is exactly why. Woman have been seen as holy, sacred creatresses for all time, except here and now. Many major religions view God as male and if God is male- male is God. Women are considered lesser and instructed to stay covered and modest and to not express the natural beauty that is woman. Because if they do, they’re asking for it. Without respect for the holy womb, where ALL life comes from- woman are assumed the SECOND BEST SEX.
Kurt Cobain is right, we (females) can protect ourselves all we want, we can stay strong and alert but WE’RE NOT THE PROBLEM. We’re not attacking anyone. Young boys need to be taught that girls and women are JUST AS HOLY and deserve the highest respect.

Thank you!!
]]>Thank you for writing this. It is so important to get this message out so that people will understand the connection between God as exclusively male and violence against women. This is even more timely now than when you wrote it. Why don’t you repost on FB?
