Allow me to preface this blog by telling you – I AM NOT WORTHY or anywhere near educated enough to try and explain the beauty and power that is the GODDESS KALI. But She told me to try.
Mother Kali, or Kali-Ma, is the raven-haired Hindu Goddess of ENLIGHTENMENT, LIBERATION, DEATH and REBIRTH. She is the DESTROYER that levels everything, from which new growth springs out. Kali’s name means “TIME” and “BLACK” in Sanskrit, because She is the DARK SPACE before time from which ALL existence comes from.
She has a HUNDRED NAMES and some devotees do rituals involving reciting the names and offering each other ROSE PETALS every night for 108 nights. (Sounds fun!) Even these devotees cannot try to explain Her; in her book IN PRAISE OF ADYA KALI, Aditi Devi writes “How can we slip into this river together, in a way that will help you approach the BLUE-BLACK Goddess Kali at the center of the YONIVERSE?” I agree, Aditi.
To me She seems like a pissed off Mother, doing ANYTHING She can to protect Her Children. As Mother Nature sometimes causes havoc with natural disasters, in TIME, SHE restores the land. Kali-Ma reminds us of our Feminine force (PMS Kali-power, anyone?) and to lead with the heart and not the intellect.

She is depicted violently chopping off the heads of demons and the egocentric. Kali reminds us that the physical is temporary. She is the greatest teacher of practicing UN-ATTACHMENT. Like the Buddhist monks that spend hundreds of hours ceremoniously sculpting their rainbow sand mandalas; upon completion only to whist it all away with hand brooms, reminding all of the transitory nature of all things material. Your ego is clinging on to some form of identification
When the U.S. recently elected a candidate to high office, I immediately saw the bloated orange man as the Goddess Kali in disguise. She is working through him to CUT OFF THE HEADS of the ego-full in HER way, destroying everything that had recently been attained. Kali as president called Her Sacred Females to rise up and MARCH. She’s shedding light on the hateful, bringing up fear so that it can be distinguished and healed. Like, Kali, destruction gives way to NEW BEGINNINGS and life will goes on.
In “The Heart of the Goddess” Hallie Iglehart Austen wrote “According to Hindu cosmology, we are now living in the age of Kali. Kali energy is what moves through us in times of tremendous change, when we must face the essential impermanence of life and learn to let go.. [It’s] moving through our world today, as we face the consequences of SUPRESSING THE SACRED FEMININE.”
Kali Ma, Mother Kali,
give me Your courage that I may face my fears.
Let me name them;
let me offer them to you.
Kali Ma, I offer you my pettiness,
I offer you my sorrow.
Great Mother, consume them, cut through them,
burn them up.
Release me from the illusions of separation and ego,
free me from the bonds of attachment.
Give me the power to transform my anger
and frustration into clear and powerful action,
that I make create healing change
in myself and the world.
