NEMESIS

Hymn to Nemesis

By Mesomedes, 2nd Century Crete

Nemesis, winged tilter of scales and lives,

Justice-spawned Goddess with steel-blue eyes!

You bridle vain men who roil in vain

Against Your adamantine rein.

Great hater of hubris and megalomania,

Obliterator of black resentment,

By Your trackless, churning, wracking wheel

Man’s glinting fortunes turn on Earth.

You come in oblivion’s cloak to bend

The grandeur-deluded rebel neck,

With forearm measuring out lifetimes,

With brow frowning into the heart of man

And the yoke raised sovereign in Your hand.

Hail, dark-skinned Justice-Queen.”

As with all that is Feminine, attention and truth has been shrouded and misconstrued surrounding the Goddess Nemesis.

Comic books and television has taught us that She is our ARCHRIVAL or the ANTI-CHRIST. But Nemesis is actually the revered Greek Goddess of Retribution that inflicted PUNISHMENT on the deserving, Her name translates as: “to give what is due”.

“NEMESIS was the Goddess of indignation against, and retribution for, EVIL DEEDS and undeserved GOOD FORTUNE. She was a personification of the resentment aroused in men by those who commited crimes with apparent impunity, or who had inordinate good fortune.

Nemesis directed human affairs in such a way as to maintain equilibrium.” –theoi.com.

She is RELENTLESS JUSTICE, and governs over the BALANCE of human actions and their rewards. Nemesis brought arrogant Narcissus to the pond in which he drowned, so enamored by his own reflection. (Several political leaders come to mind of whom She should visit!)

Daughter of Oceanus, (the river that encircles the world), Nemesis is the mother of two sets of twins. One of Her daughters is the tragically beautiful, HELEN OF TROY.

Nemesis rides in a chariot drawn by GRIFFINS and is often shown holding SCALES. The ruins of Her two temples still stand outside of Athens and are still popular tourist attractions.

Our elegant and effervescent model Brooke, was actually born on the day of the Nemesis celebration in Greece (according to Julie Loar’s “GODDESSES for Every Day”).

I didn’t know this fact when I first cast Brooke as the Lady Justice (https://plus.google.com/107287050579003737566/posts/1dZiYyVxVwN ) of how both “Goddesses” were so interwoven. This is what Brooke had to say about portraying, Nemesis:

“Goddess Nemesis is the the FIERY WOMAN we all want to be. She’s that VENGEFUL SPIRIT that we all carry inside. Nemesis can be meek and quiet in her acts and she can sound trumpets if she must. As women we’ve all picked our own method of dealing with a situation. I am a passive aggressive woman, my vengeful ways are silent. Therefore, any woman who has been hurt will identify with Goddess Nemesis because She’s the woman we all can be.

Sometimes revenge is just the sweetest medicine for the enemy.” Thank you so much Brooke, may Justice prevail on Earth.

Special thanks to David Clanton of davidclanton.com for working tirelessly to help us capture the power of these Goddesses.
